Real Love, Lisa Stansfield 2nd album, is on sale in the market in november, 1991. After Affection success, Lisa has to prove herself as good interpreter and made an album in which tipically pop influence is defenitely reduced. As for Affection, arrangements and texts are handeled by her in collaboration with Andy Morris and Ian Devaney which play the majority of the instruments. The album opens with Change, a World success (especially appreciated by the Italian population) in which, for the video shooted in Lisbon, Lisa appears in all of her 25 years of beauty and freshness. This track is of great interest even today, after 19 years, in particular for the strings and wind instruments that make it very elegant: this is probably the only track in which we can find again pop influence. Change, as a single, became number 1 in dance USA billboard charts, meanwhile reached number 2 for the Italian hit parade. Track no.2 is Real love in which strings are the most important part and track no.3 is Set your loving free, 4th single with the relative video, supported by with the most important bass that is accompanied by wind instruments and strings that make the difference.
With track 4 (I will be waiting) and 5 (All woman) we have the real essence of the album, in which Lisa Stansfield demonstrates her vocal maturity, shows us a stronger voice and maintaining at the same time, all Affection positive chacteristics. All woman is also the 2nd single and became number 1 in R&B USA billboard charts. Afterwards we can find number 6 Soul deep in which Lisa reminds us of Diana Ross, and number 7 Make love to ya, a heartbeat rhythm track where Lisa and the choristers Anna Ross and Aileen Mc Laughlin give us a great performance. Track no.8 Time to make you mine is also the 3rd single and reached, in the UK top 20 hit parade good positions, accompained by an interesting video in which Lisa appears nearly nude in a sort of wood where plants became magically animated and she sings with a whispering and persuasive voice. Symptoms of loneliness & heartache in the number 9, this is a dance and involvin’ track with great wind instruments (trumpet and central bridge with flute).
Afterwards we find It’s got to be real, another album’s great moment, a fantastic rhythmal base in which Lisa’s voice is defenitely strong and wonderful and not boring with forced shrill and stressed virtuosity, which is tipical for others stars, that demonstrates an extraordinary elegance and force. Number 11 First joy represents probably the album’s least brilliant moment even if certainly built on a good base and however sang well by Stansfield.Track no.12 is Tenderly another great performance in which Lisa shows us her great talent “making the song” just with her voice, simply accompained by keyboard chords: this is certainly a “must” moment even for those who don’t perfectly know the Queen of british soul. The album closes with A little more love gifted by a beautiful text, interpreted by Lisa with high intensity and centered by a great Sax assolo: in the USA, it reached great positions in the R&B USA billboard charts. In my opinion, Real Love is qualitatively better than Affection, in which strings and wind instruments are really of high quality , drums are finally acoustic and well played, Devaney is also talented even as a bassist, well constructed texts (speak about love but never simple). In the end, even if it drew less success than the first album, this Real Love is Lisa’s best work of her career.
In 2003 Real love digipack edition, inserted in The complete collection, we can find some bonus tracks: Everything will get better, at first published together with All woman single in the USA, meanwhile Whenever you're gone were already included in the japanese version of the album. Change (Frankie knuckles mix) remix closed the tracklist.
